Actually America already is a Socialist state in a lot of ways. I don't think that is necessarily good or bad, but it's funny to hear the neo-cons go on about fear of socialism when they don't even know what it is. Farm subsidies, gas price manipulation, FEMA, Medicade, Social Security, the list goes on.

No we aren't as overtly socialist as France or England, but anyone who thinks we really have a free market economy is seriously delusional, and that was before the supposed neo-con capitalist Bush administration Treasury Department bought controlling stocks in all of the major financial institutions!

Even Bush's inane No Child Left Behind program is pure socialism in that it takes public education and through standardized tests makes it easier for the government to quantify results and work to make all educators teach the same materials in the same manner.

In reality, as Hitler's National Socialists clearly demonstrated, a large military budget is the surest sign of socialism (i.e. the government controlling the economy and industrial sector, though in the U.S. we pretend the Defense Dept. and defense contractors are separate entities even though the same people usually work for both at different times).

So when right wingers go on about fear of America turning to socialism it's always pretty amusing. They got upset about gas going over $4 a gallon when our government was holding that price down for them while the rest of the world paid at least twice as much.
