Yeah, people are far too hysterical about the whole thing, I agree, and many people might use hysteria as an excuse for abuse of power (even down to your local pub doorman).
People are going to be overly concerned and you have to behave appropriately as to not freak anyone out. I realize this may feel like a violation of one's rights, but unfortunately, it's the times we are now living in until people get a clue.
If you don't like it, you should write your representatives or run for office.
