ow, poor guy, i am sorry, yes, you were conned.
desperado was a hollywood-style remake of his wonderful "el mariachi" which is a fun fun fun little movie made with little money. if you haven't seen it, check it out, it's nothing "deep" but it's a good show of what you can do with little
dinero and lots of resourcefulness.
i think desperado suffered from many problems, mainly cheesiness, sure-- but also rodriguez famously had troubles working in a studio because he was accustomed to doing everything pretty much by himself. having a large crew and millions of dolars actually worked against him. he adapted later, but he also eventually built his own studio in texas where he's made things like sin city & so on. he is a fun action movie guy; not my favorite director, but he has a talent for certain things. desperado was just ridiculous and unwatchable.

these films arnt over-rated..noone likes them that much for them to be over-rated.
