Jesus was attempting to usurp the family, which is something that all religion aims to do. Religion and family fight for influence over individuals, but family always comes before God, no matter what anybody says. Jesus was a smart dude and saw the problem early - let the children come to him, not their parents. Smart guy, Jesus.
