I hate that Altman chose to open the film with that scene but I can't deny that it is amazingly well done. I just think his decision to do it only further reinforces the film's general air of self congratulation - although that could probably be said of almost all of Altman's films. Of that whole movie brat generation, I tend to think he was the flashiest, with arguably the least substance. That's why The Player sort of irritates me; I see it as a quite shallow movie, made by a quite shallow filmmaker, condemning what he perceives to be the shallowness of mainstream hollywood. Hollywood is shallow, but Altman's about the last person who should be bringing it up (besides maybe Nic Roeg).
