I just listened to Death Magnetic again the other day, and it's still pretty good, though I don't understand why some people think it's Metallica backpedaling. OK, most of the riffs are pure 80s thrash, but some of the songs have some things I haven't heard the band try before, like six count rhythms (The Judas Kiss), ambient intros (That Was Just Your Life, All Nightmare Long), and some of Kirk's leads literally come out of nowhere-listen to it on headphones and they can really catch you off guard.

Megadeth: I won't come out and say they're better, but there are some things they do better than Metallica. Someone once said no one could write a meaner riff than James Hetfield, but I'd like to see him write a song as in your face as Wake Up Dead or Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, and even their most commerical album (Countdown to Extinction) is heavier than Metallica's at the time (the "Black Album"). On the other hand, Risk isn't much better than Reload...
