Is it just me or are bad speakers better than good speakers?

I have these really crappy IBM speakers. I've tried to figure out what kind they are online but I just can't so I guess they're old? But they sound AWESOME, best speakers I've ever had, although to be fair I've never had too many. So is it possible that "poor" speakers can still sound good? :|

Sure, why not. I have these old white Altec Lansing speakers from '96 or '97. And they sound better than both pairs of these Harmon/Kardons I have and their both only a few years old.

I miss my Advents from the 70s. They were perfect.

altec lansing used to make PA's so I'm not suprised they sound decent, although their PA's never sounded that great, also Harmon Kardon aren't renowned for making good speakers. They do make good amplifier/receivers though.

I have a packard bell computer with a packard bell monitor with the speakers sticking to the monitor. This monitor/speaker combo is from about 13 years ago. THey sound great!

bass is yr enemy.

and by that, I mean, Public Enemy.

bass fer yr face, london.

I'm sure some types of music will perform better than others on yr speakers, but no matter how good they sound, there's a good chance the same music will sound better on "good" speakers.

Having heard both, I will agree that music can be played through bad speakers, but I pretty much always prefer it through good speakers. You know, because they can handle sound better.

I wish I could afford the Snell speakers that are for sale from my work place (as well as the Atma-Sphere stereo system to drive them), but I am still pretty happy with my 1970s Altec Lansings, which were a "christmas bonus" from an old friend I used to work for.

Good speakers. I like to hear bass and I prefer not to have my speakers distort things that aren't supposed to be distorted.

Too bad my poor speakers are just poor speakers.

i have bose interaudio 4000's - these have about 3db hump from around 80-150hz which muddies the sound a bit at decent levels, at low level they perform very well. don't get me wrong though they still sound reasonable and i got them for free.

i also have my yamaha hs80 monitor speakers in my studio which sound great for their price but not as transparent as the 1970's tannoy reds and auratones and genelecs we have in the studio at work...

i also have some little jbl travel speakers which aren't too bad, but in general i have an extreme dislike for computer/portable speaker systems...
