Do you fuck around at work?

I sometimes sit the whole day at work, surfing the net and posting on the SY forum.

A friend of mine told me a funny story once, about a friend of his that went for a job interview to work in a shipyard doing odd jobs.
He got a contract and was told to go to an area of the harbour and wait for further instructions.
He did so, but nobody came. After waiting 2-3 hours, he got bored and looked for something to do. The only thing he could find was a 2 meter long steel pipe, so he picked it up and started walking around with it.
That lasted a year... yeah, you heard me... a whole year before somebody noticed that he was doing sweet bugger all.
When his boss asked him about it, he answered by saying that noone had given him work to do when he had asked.
He was fired on the spot and his wages were reversed. Ha!

I'd die of boredom at work if it wasn't for this forum.

porkmarras 08.04.2006 05:50 AM

I'm rather good at my job but on days like these it can be a bit tedious.i've pretty much done everything that i needed doing(paperwork wise) and the phone has gone a little quite.Guess what?I was talking to someone related to the late Brian Epstein last week.

Trasher02 08.04.2006 06:15 AM

Walking around with a pipe...
Kick ass job!

Toilet & Bowels 08.04.2006 06:49 AM

when you say his wages were reversed does that mean he had to pay them back?

_slavo_ 08.04.2006 06:49 AM

haha that was a funny story.

It did ruin him. He's still paying it off.
He got a lawyer to defend him, but lost the case. Something to do with him not using his own initiative. Ha!

Cantankerous 08.04.2006 07:43 AM

yeah, we sit around and throw things at each other mostly.

Toilet & Bowels 08.04.2006 07:46 AM

i can't believe he was dumb enough to keep doing it for a year, i mean he was bound to get found out sooner or later. but then his employers were even stupider.

That's a pretty horrible story. Can he not go to the European tribunal or something? It wasn't his fault after all but the negligence of his employees.

Tokolosh 08.04.2006 08:13 AM

Well, there are lots of people working there and most of them know what to do. They don't see their bosses for months on end and don't need to really. It's very fexible work. The one day you're sweeping dock 51 and the next day you're moving a heep of scrap metal out of dock 12.
Nobody knows eachother on such a large location and that's how he kept it up so long.
I personally think he sussed out the situation, saw the opportunity and played stupid! :D

porkmarras 08.04.2006 08:21 AM

Sorry there but i meant employers and not employees.

Tokolosh 08.04.2006 08:28 AM

Let's be honest. How many of us avoid doing crap tasks at work, when we know someone else will do it?

porkmarras 08.04.2006 08:31 AM

I can't because i mainly work by myself.

Tokolosh 08.04.2006 08:38 AM

I plan my own deadlines, 'cause nobody here can do my job. ;)

porkmarras 08.04.2006 08:40 AM

Same here.I'm kinda my own boss to a certain degree. If i am missing they are hopeless at technology in here.

Tokolosh 08.04.2006 08:46 AM

What a life, heh?
Surfing... talking shit the whole day on the forum... What else could ya ask for. :)

Iain 08.04.2006 08:47 AM

Do I ever! What do you think I'm doing now? Sure as heck isn't work.

jon boy 08.04.2006 08:56 AM

when i do work then yes i tend to slack off and do more posting on here and looking at the internet than anyone realises. i like those days when no one else is around and you can just sit back and read.

porkmarras 08.04.2006 09:07 AM

Today really is one of those days for me.

sonicl 08.04.2006 09:12 AM

Me too.

gmku 08.04.2006 09:12 AM

I'm pretty much responsible for myself but I shouldn't goof off as much as I do (i.e., post here!).

About the guy who got fired--I would have started doing something, anything, just so I'd have something to say if I ever got caught. "Oh, yeah, this is what I was told to do. I inventory the shelves, restock them, and stay in touch with repair services..." Or whatever shit seemed appropriate. "I didn't get any further instructions, so I just thought I was supposed to pick it up on my own." In other words, make it look like you DID use some initiative but apparently didn't get it right because management failed to follow up with you.

Or go and look at what the job description said, at least, and know enough to say that's what you'd been doing, even if you weren't.

jon boy 08.04.2006 09:12 AM

i had that yesterday. i will spare you the details, but it was bad almost from start to finish. apart from a few hours of repreive.

atari 2600 08.04.2006 09:13 AM

It's dead here as well at the hehe home office.

Friday morns are usually much busier for me.

gmku 08.04.2006 09:15 AM

When I'm not posting here, I'm doing work in bits and pieces so it appears I'm busy. And in between those times, I'm sneaking off to the record stores or coffee houses, or thinking about the next time I can do so. I'm a true slacker.

porkmarras 08.04.2006 09:16 AM

Monday i came here an hour anf half early to sort out the mistakes of people who couldn't cope with the crashed computerized system.........and i'm not getting paid for that either, damn it!

matt g 08.04.2006 12:23 PM

i have a very lax job, i too, am practically my own boss. they make up for that by shafting me in the $$$$ dept.
i did this at work with company camera, on a week when the owners were in Vegas for some trade show. i just started learning how to use the camera, because i learned where it is stashed when not in use.

screamingskull 08.04.2006 12:26 PM

i cant really mess around, there's no one to mess around with, all the other people who work there are too serious!, and i get yelled at weekly for not approaching customers as soon as they enter the shop anyway!, if i was to actually do something wrong GOD KNOWS!!!! what would happen!

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 02:11 PM

i goof off if it's the right class/right time.

Hip Priest 08.04.2006 02:15 PM

Go online, play scrabble, chat, drink coffee, have a laugh. It's all part of the job.

Inhuman 08.04.2006 02:24 PM

Well, I slack all the time at work. It's usually cut grass, do water coolers, then slack the last 2 hours of the day. We drive these at work:

What we do is go to the dump where we keep all our sand, soil, sod, etc... and it's just all dirt so we do donuts and see who can get the most mud on the other person.

Interesting story about your friend haha. That's incredible that it lasted a year
