SY @ United Palace Theater
Hey guys,
Have any of you ever been there? I bought tickets and it appears to be seated. That sucks? Or does it? Can anyone give me some insight into this venue? Thanks:) |

do they metal wand there? is sound sucky in upper balconeys? |
The Building - Beautiful. I would love to hear Cotton Crown in such a setting.
The Sound - I was there once before for Beck and sat in the balcony. I don't recall any extreme positives or negatives about the sound. Seats - I've never been to a seated SY show, but now that I'm old and decrepit, it actually sounds appealing all of the sudden. Location - Here's the big turd in your ice cream sundae. If you live in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens, this place is so far uptown that it might be quicker to travel south around the globe and then approach it from Canada. It actually makes me wish I owned a car in the city. |
A seated Sonic Youth show will be wierd to me. In any case I just ordered tickets. Ticketmaster is fucking expensive. $38 + $10.15 convenience charge per ticket + ~$3.65 other random charge. I picked up tickets for friends too, so that came to just under $200. Ouch.
They're probably going to play another free show on July 4th or something, but I'll be working that day anyway. Do we have any idea who will be opening for them on this tour, or this particular show? |
Hi guys! I just bought my ticket to this show. I've never been to the United Palace. Actually, I live abroad and I will be in NYC in July. I bought my ticket in the ORCHESTRA section (45 bucks + several convenience charges, OUCH), but I did not get a seat number. This is worrying me! All the information I got was:
SECTION: ORCHESTRA ROW: CC SEATS: 105 Could someone please help me out here? Where the hell is my seat? I'm kind of lost here. Thanks! |

Looks like you're pretty close. I think I'm in row Z or something? oy. |
^
I just don't get why the two letters for the row... Why "CC" and not "C". Also, how do I know the number of my seat? Sorry for the stupid question here, but I'm used to seated shows where you actually select your seat. Your was automatically selected, right? I just bought mine, about 20 minutes ago. Maybe it's more to the front 'cause I bought a single ticket...? |

I think it was closer up because you bought the $45 ticket versus the $38 ticket. I opted for the $38 tickets and purchased four. I ended up getting some seats in the Orchestra in row M. Or row MM. Or whatever the fuck. |

Mine was also selected for me. You probably got the more expensive ticket. CC might mean you're in the center vs. right or left or something. |
Do you think we'll be able to stand up during it?
|

I'm hoping on it. If this is one of those deals where douches start hissing at you because they can't see because you're standing and they want to sit on their fat asses, I just might have to punch a dude. |

I hope so! I've only been to one Sonic Youth show, in São Paulo, 2005. There were about 30 thousand people there, and that's the only way I can imagine a SY show! It will be great to see them in a smaller venue, though. I did see some pictures of a Beck concert at United Palace, and everyone was seated. On the other hand, I googled United Palace, and some folks were mentioning a TV On the Radio where everyone was standing up, so I guess we never know! Does it take too long to get from Brooklyn to the United Palace? It seems to far uptown. |

I'm seeing PJ Harvey at a theatre in DC with what seems to be a similar seating arrangement as yours. The first 5 rows or so I believe are double lettered, like AA through EE, and then from there, it's rows A through Z. You're very close to the stage! :) |
^
Awesome! Thank you for the info. :) |
when I saw the daydream nation show at the greek in LA, everyone was standing, even clear in the back where I was...
I got tickets in row E in the front loge so my back is against the wall, just in case.... |
Because of the ridiculous price of this I decided to get tickets for the Philly show instead. Here's hoping they play another nyc show on the 4th or 5th.
|

Yes, the price is definitely ridiculous. I would have thought twice if I actually lived in the US, where they tour all the time. Seeing that I live abroad, opportunities to see SY live are rare. And besides the ridiculous price, the United Palace seems to be pretty far uptown! |

haha im with you there. i'll throw the first punch and everyone else will just jump in. i was thinking about seeing them in philly but i hate driving there and i saw them at the fillmore last year. this would be the first time i'm seeing a legit SY show in NYC. not counting NO FUN because apparently Lee is not showing up |
yeah i got tic without really realizing where the venue was.. might not have if i realized it was up by the GWB.
Also got row N for a single tix which kinda sucked since apparently people getting tix today are getting them closer... stupid pre pre sale Quote:
seems pretty clear where your seats are. row CC (if you look on the venues web page you will see that's the 3'rd row or so) seat 105. pretty self explanatory. |

I have no idea why they chose to play such a place. |

I figured that out by now, but I was so nervous last night that I suffered from some sort of brain malfunction, hehehe. |
So, for this amount of money do you think we're going to get a 'special guest' as the opener?
|
I just a search for a friend of mine, who's considering going to the show, and now that the pre-sales have ended, I'm finding much better seats than the ones all of us got. This is ridiculous!!!
|
I am excited for the uptown show, for I live 30 blocks north, in Inwood, so i can even walk to and from the show!! Thx SY for playing ever so close to my home!!!
I hear the sound there is very nice. I am also pleased with the seating, for I am in my late 30's now, still like to dance, but also like to chill sometimes. I was lucky enough to get an aisle seat in Row P, Orchestra. |
Saw Neil Young here a year ago last winter. The place is ORNATE. Have you ever been to the Beacon? It makes the Beacon look like CBGB's bathroom. The ceiling is mosaic tile work that was put up by Monks in the 1600's
The lobby is undersized for the size of the venue and if the show is sold out you'll notice the bump and grind trying to get to your section. ![]() |
Yeah, and that's all well and good for acts like Neil Young (I think he did the half-acoustic/half-electric set there), but SY? Iunno. It just doesn't look like too fitting of a venue for them.

Massey Hall in Toronto is pretty classy too.
|
Most of the venues i recognize (the Bijou in Knoxville the Variety in atlanta vic in chi town and this place) are pretty nice theaters.
I remember the Variety actually had an attendant (old black guy) in the bathroom selling things like cologne and handing people towels last time i saw SY there (He was joining the fans in bitching about Harry pussy's set) |

Sonik played the Roxy in Atlanta '95 with Harry Pussy opening, the Variety is a little grittier and has no bathroom attendent |
I saw a few shows there, including the Neil Young gig where the FDNY delayed the show for about 2 hours due to fire safety issues or so they claimed....
be careful if you're using the subway on the way back, look out for undercover police in the station. I saw people getting detained for going in through the emergency exit doors after every concert. It's a bad situation because they have only one or two turnstiles on the south side of the station and the line to go in gets very long, so of course people go in through the emergency exit doors and get busted. Use the north side entrance instead. |

The Roxy is really nice and rundown, and they still have a bathroom attendent. |
