sonic youth signs with Matador

from the main page:

rom Matador Records:

"After rampant speculation, Matador Records can confirm the label will be releasing a new studio album from Sonic Youth sometime in 2009. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to release the band's 16th album of new material in all worldwide territories, save for Japan.

While Sonic Youth's status as one of the more innovative and influential bands of the past 30 years needs little explanation, the group's most recent recordings for Geffen --- 2006's 'Rather Ripped' being their final for the label --- rank amongst the current decade's best. For Matador, the opportunity to work in partnership with a group who've made such an profound impact on our roster/hometown/collective consciousness was one to jump at. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will commence recording the new Sonic Youth LP/CD this autumn and we look forward to sharing further details in the very near future."

I cant decide whats bigger right now, this or the LHC, lol

noisereductions 09.09.2008 09:10 AM

This move seems completely logical. No shock. But it's good. They'll be in good company. And Matador has been quality for years. And they've got great distribution.

greenlight 09.09.2008 09:23 AM

thanks for update!

I figure it's due to Mark Ibold's influence.

_slavo_ 09.09.2008 10:33 AM

Nice to hear that. I've always liked Matador.

nicfit 09.09.2008 10:34 AM

ha ha they'll fill BRH spot.

less_cunning 09.09.2008 10:56 AM

Pax Americana 09.09.2008 11:21 AM

Cool. Can't wait to hear what the new album is like.

mil_pl 09.09.2008 11:25 AM

Rob Instigator 09.09.2008 11:41 AM

I hoe they rock our asses off.

having listened to Marquee Moon at least 8 times since I bought it a few weeks ago, I can completely understand what Thurston Moore said whbefore RR came out about how it was a combo of Marquee moon and some other shit.

Kegmama 09.09.2008 11:56 AM

Thanks for the update. Can't wait for the new album!

Everyneurotic 09.09.2008 12:18 PM

so i'm going to pre-order the new album on insound, that's cool.

Moshe 09.09.2008 01:44 PM

Thanks for the news Jef!

I wonder if that means more compilations, singles, dvds and stuff?
I wonder why the deal is just for one album?
I wonder why the deal doesn't include Japan?
I wonder if it effects the deal between universal and ecstatic peace?
I wonder if will get more deluxe editions (like pavement)?

Well, I wonder...

japan is very strict about imports and licenses, hardly any non-major label have japanese branches because the government likes to support japan-based businesses (in this case, record labels) instead of foreign biz. that's why even major label stuff in japan has extra tracks and shit, because they want the japanese to consume japanese product instead of imports.

matador has some alianses with japanese labels, they are sure to sign with them shortly.

MellySingsDoom 09.09.2008 01:57 PM

Well, this is good news for us all here. It's good to know that we'll definitely have an SY album to looke forward to in 2009.

SonikJesus 09.09.2008 02:09 PM

Is it only for one album? Anyways, good news.

o'connor 09.09.2008 02:10 PM

awesome.

radarmaker 09.09.2008 02:17 PM

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the Gerard Cosloy connection yet - it's kinda fitting that they've gone full-circle after their somewhat acrimonious departure from Homestead.

akprodr 09.09.2008 02:32 PM

Does this mean Madonna covers? They haven't done one for ages!

i was gonna earlier, but i was gonna go into their past and how sy moved on and how sore cosloy was about it but didn't want to go into it

Everyneurotic 09.09.2008 02:37 PM

gerard probably is grateful about a second chance.

pantophobia 09.09.2008 02:39 PM

true, and i guess time heals old wounds

viewtiful_alan 09.09.2008 02:45 PM

Another link on the matter.

jennthebenn 09.09.2008 02:56 PM

they cropped steve "the man" shelley outta that picture! stupid RS.

dazedcola 09.09.2008 04:34 PM

this is great news.Matador will treat SY well and give them a lot more free reign than any major label would.

max 09.09.2008 04:45 PM

http://www.nme.com/news/sonic-youth/39592

btw - it is also logical to suppose that in these times of uncertainty a band like SY would like to see how the label treats their first output before signing extensive deals...

nancykitten 09.09.2008 04:52 PM

Nice. Lucky Matador.

GrungeMonkey 09.09.2008 05:37 PM

Its no real surprise. But as one of the big indies, its the kind of label SY should be on, I guess. Cant wait to hear it!

He said that? Dead right - "Incinerate" definitely sounds like a heavenly cross between Television and The Who. MAN, I gotta play that one right now...

deflinus 09.09.2008 07:25 PM

great news. i kinda figured they'd go for a one album deal. i dont think they're going to sign up for 4 record deal considering that they ARE pretty old.

the new album is going to be just what i need

viewtiful_alan 09.09.2008 07:26 PM

I just hope this wont be followed by some sort of 'final album' announcement...

PEOPLE, nooo... They got YEARS of rock & roll ahead of 'em!

viewtiful_alan 09.09.2008 08:03 PM

We can only hope so..

whorefrost 09.10.2008 01:43 AM

I think Murray Street sounds more like Television

Moshe 09.10.2008 01:50 AM

Can you tell me why you all so happy? Do you think that Matador will make the songs sound better?

atsonicpark 09.10.2008 01:51 AM

hahaha.

MOSHE WINS.

Personally, I dislike most bands on Matador. They're the most popular independant label besides maybe Sub Pop, right? So, this isn't a big surprise. And it's not going to effect anything either way besides having the ugly-ass Matador logo on the back of their CD art.
