mixtape request
can somebody make me a mixtape of really really good rap/hip hop music????
Please, i am trying to broaden my musical tastes, but i don't know where to start with rap music. I know i don't like much current rap music, like 50 cent etc etc, but the stuff that came out of brooklyn in the early 80's seems to be really awesome. |
Sugar Hill Records stuff is totally essential, if you are going that far back.
This 2-CD, fairly cheap compilation is a good start, and has some totally mindblowing tracks on it: http://www.discogs.com/release/257705 It's called ''Back To The Old School - Sugar Hill Club Classics'' |
thats a really good idea porky. thanks :)
also, does anyone know where i should start with Rage Against The Machine?? |

Don't. |

The Roots Wu-Tang Clan (GZA, RZA) Mos Def Outkast Dungeon Family Public Enemy N.W.A Thought I'd start you off w/ the legendary artists/groups of rap, meaning obvious. |
Quote:
Well, that's one's opinion, but I would start w/ RATM's debut album (S/T). They really only had 2 great records, that & Evil Empire. |
Quote:
If you're starting with them I'd say Evil Empire or their debut. Avoid Renegades at all costs. |
okally dokally, i can pick that up on friday.
now back to rap music, does anyone want to make me a mix tape? |
Sure, I'll do it. I've been needing an excuse to drag out all my 80s hip-hop music.
Sugar Hill Gang is the place to start. |

I'll make you one if you promise to start a thread where you tell the world that you can't get enough of Abba's life-affirming songs and that you'll never, ever buy a Rage Against The Machine record. Deal? |

you are too nice. :) :D ;) :p |

ha ha ha, man i can't do that, i'd lose whats left of my credibility. ![]() will you make me one anyway??? pwwwwwwwwwwease! if you and sonic youth 37 make me one i will have loads!!!! |
BTW, if you're looking for good newer rap, pick up Clipse's album Lord Willin'
|

ok, i will get that and RATM's self titled one on friday :) |
good hiphop was coming out of all 5 boroughs in the early 80s, not just brooklyn
|

|

|
oooooooo, i don't know if i will like that irish one?????, like most english people, i have a slight problem with the irish/scottish/french etc etc etc.
do you think i will like it? |
damn straight you will. im not talking u2 or cranberries stuff. im talking proper good underground irish that probably never left these shores.... try it at least!
|
ok, cos i was thinking U2 and cranberries.
ha ha |
jeez, i thought you knew me better than that now my dear!!!!!!
im off to watch footy now, talk later go on barca! |
does anyone want to make me a Janes Addiction mixtape??
|
Just grab Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual and you're set for all the Jane's Addiction you'll ever need. or just find "Jane Says" "Mountain Song" and "Been Caught Stealing"
|

They are a band i have been meaning to check out for a really long time. They just look soooo fucking kool in the "been caught stealing" video. I'm going to see if they have that video on itunes. ![]() they had great style! ha ha ha |

To me, they're a band that their only really good songs are their singles that everyone's heard. The rest of the songs are just...okay. I'll throw in CD-Rs of Nothing's Shocking and Ritual with my mixtape. Just save your cash for something more worth it. |
it will take me ages to make a mixtape, i will do it, but it will just take me an age to get around to doing it, so in the meantime check out these year by year hiphop mixes that i just came across on this website, there's a mix for every year from 1979 to 1999.

I don't know too much about rap, but I know that Octagonecolagyst by Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith) is fricking awesome.
And DJ Dangermouse's The Gray Album. (Jay-Z's Black Album plus Beatles White Album) is also awesome |
I'd be happy to make you a mix-tape, I probably listen to more hip-hop than y'know, rock. If your interested give me a shout...

Anything by A Tribe Called Quest is essential
|

i probably wont get a chance to do those tapes this weekend, my little ones 7th birthday party and stuff on so i promise ill get them done during the week for you.. sorry about the delay! johnny... pm sent...as you will probably know before i typed this! |
If you want any modern hip-hop then definitely go for Pharoahe Monch, his new album Desire is brilliant.
In terms of albums, my personal favourites are GZA/The Genius - Liquid Swords and Nas - Illmatic. |
hey this is not here, i just got your mixtape!!!
listening to it now! thanks a lot!! It's great so far! really different to what i was expecting! "your revolution will not happen between these thighs" |
Sonicl?! Isn't he dead or something? I think you meant This Is Not Here, screamingskull. But yeah, no problem at all, listen out for the last track For All Those Killed By Cops, its one of the most uplifting peices of music I've ever heard. PM the final verdict when you've finished listening. Enjoy!
