Juno
I saw it today with my Dad after gifts and brunch while others stayed behind to work on dinner.
It was really good. Juno and Jason' Bateman's character (the prospective adoptive father) sort of form a bond because they both like guitar and horror movies, so he has her listen to his favorite song: Sonic Youth's version of Superstar. Later in the movie she says in anger "I bought a Sonic Youth album and it was nothing but noise." (Odd because in the movie Raw Power is her favorite album.) That gave me a good laugh. It is a really cute movie though, I'd recommend it. |
Really? I heard it was bland from a not-so-good friend of mine. He said it was "dry" like Little Miss Sunshine... I loved Little Miss Sunshine.
Well, thanks for convincing me. I'm seeing it. |
It was not nearly as dry as Little Miss Sunshine. I thought it was much better. It's cute and quirky but never over the top. I'd put it more in the league of "Me, You, and Everyone We Know", "Rusmore", "The Squid and the Whale" and "Ghost World." It isn't incredibly similar to those movies, but definitely fits right in with the same wave of filmmaking so to speak.
|
I love dry humor. Life Aquatic was on TV the other day.
|
I saw it today too, it was funny as hell.

I love that too. |
I don't know, man. I haven't seen it yet, but it is getting a lot of hype. I don't know if I trust it. The hype seems to be perpetuated by the success of Little Miss Sunshine, which I don't like for some reason (I loved LMS, but the fact that it is going to be popular, slightly because of LMS).
I'll probably see it. |
It is nothing like LMS. It is good on its own accord. Very good funny ass hell. One of the best comedies this year.
|
dry humor is my favorite kind. dark, dry humor.
i may go see it. |

Sort of how this one girl won't shut up about how she 'loves' The Darjeeling Limited but hasn't seen it. Grr. Shit annoys me. But I will not let it ruin Juno for me. |
ive seen the trailer & loved it
can't wait to see the whole thing shenanigans |
Can't wait to see it (it's not playing at the big theatre, and it's not yet playing at the smaller theatre...)
It looks fucking hilarious, and just all around good. And the Darjeeling Limited was brought up. My favourite movie of the year, I was looking orward to it for soooo long, and it completely lived up to expectations (if not KILLED them). Wes Anderson is definitely my favourite living director. Maybe even unliving, too. His movies always strike a certain chord that nothing else can touch. |
Hmm, it is playing near me. Perhaps I shall see it today.

Good flick - I posted pics of the author, Diablo Cody - here:
http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...188#post495188 |
Yes, you did. I saw her on a little promo bumper spot for the Sundance Channel. Diablo Cody talks for a few seconds and a clip is shown.
the plot seems to go Cera loads bun into the Juno girl's oven pregnant girl offers baby for adoption girl develops crush on prospective adoptive father Bateman further dramedy ensues prospective adoptive mother Jennifer Garner gets jealous (great casting btw b/c that alias chick isn't all that likeable of a personality) etcetera Thanks for letting me know about the Sonic Youth references. It's a pity that, in the end, they get poo-pooed as "all noise" though. |
That's basically the plot. The Garner/Bateman stuff is a bit different than what it might look like. Garner is unlikable at first, but you start to respect her later.
I didn't take the SY thing too seriously, because I'm assuming she got the wrong album for a first time listener. |
I saw it. It was a good movie, but I was a little let down. I thought it was going to be better.
Also the friggin' audience pissed me off. Why do people pay $8 to see a movie and laugh at the stuff we've already seen in the previews? There were hardly any laughs otherwise. My friend and I practically died at the part where they talked about Juno's friend Leah and how she liked teachers. And you here her say "Oh I totally love Woody Allen." I don't know if it was intentional or not but all we could think of is how Allen married his adopted daughter. I also felt that it tried to hard to be quirky. It didn't bug me that much, but still. I guess the way the teenagers spoke just was stupid. Because no one I know talks that way, and she was supposed to be a junior in the movie. So in that respect I thought it was dumb. It didn't take quirkiness far enough. The jargon just came of as stupid since it was all still grounded in reality. If it had gone farther to make everything a little more strange it would have worked. |

I don't know, I bought into the way they all talked. |

This is a phenomenon I will never understand. I mean sure, to an extent we all make up our minds about movies before we even see them (or don't see them), which on one hand helps us save money instead of seeing shit we probably won't like, or on the other might ruin our moviegoing experience if we try too hard to like or dislike something because we have these expectations that need to be met. But yeah, judging from the way certain people I know talk about this movie, it's like they are already eagerly awaiting their first post-Juno visit to Facebook so they can add it to the top of their Favorite Movies section. I don't get it. I understand the thrill you get from seeing a fantastic movie, but not when you have to decide all of that beforehand. Personally I like to be caught a little off guard. Like after Spider-man 3. Which was dumb as hell but nevertheless ranks among the likes of Space Jam, The Golden Compass, and Harry Potter 5 (the third time) when it comes to my all-time favorite/most memorable moviegoing experiences. |
Space Jam? Seriously? I can't even find camp value in that movie.
I personally remember my bad movie-going experiences more. Like when I was told by my family that we were going to chinese and ended up getting dragged into the Horse Whisperer. |
Space Jam was incredible. I was eight (hopefully this will make some of you feel very old, as it should) and it was the first time my mom let me see a movie without an adult coming along. I saw it with my best friend. We were both heavily into playing basketball and watching the Bulls. We had our jerseys on. The theater was packed. It had sold out, I believe. Before the show started, some kid stood up in front of the screen and started to dance, and people threw food at him. It was a fun day. I will never forget that.
|
I see. I've always sucked at basketball, but Michael Jordan is like the Wayne Gretzky of Basketball, so he's cool.
|
Space Jam was awesome, I did not see it in the movie theaters because I was recently operated. But when I saw it at home, I really enjoyed it.
|
I really liked thinking about that.
As for the others, Spider-man 3 was just so fucking fun. Everyone was yelling at the screen, just having a good time. Again, packed. Those are the most fun. No one really cares what anyone else is doing. OH! Seeing Monty Python and the Holy Grail at midnight. Insane. This is a small town, and hardly anyone was there, but some of the people were still dressed for the occasion in whatever way they saw fit. Props were abundant. Again, more yelling. Obviously. The Golden Compass - I went with three friends from school. After sculpture class one day. We were filthy. In the movie there is this polar bear fight scene, which is the single most shocking thing any of us have ever seen in a movie. That part...everyone in the audience GASPED. It happened so fast and we were wondering what the hell we'd just seen. It was all we could talk about on the drive back to school. It's one thing to expect certain things from certain kinds of movies...and yeah, that didn't happen this time. Harry Potter 5 the third time. For some reason had more of an impact on me than the other times I saw it. I think I might have cried a little. Whatever. It came completely out of nowhere. I don't talk about this usually. |

oh no i mean michael jordan, not michael jackson |

Personally I was more shocked when Nicole Kidman slapped her monkey. |
Quote:
That sounds so wrong in so many ways. |
Can you see why I might find it hilarious though? I practically died in my seat when it happened. It was wonderful.
|
Yes, now I must see this movie.
|

Oh I agree completely. And when the polar bear goes on and on about getting paid in buckets full of whiskey and how the only work a polar bear is good for is lifting heavy objects. I kind of just sat back and tried to take all of that in, it was very bizarre and kind of made me feel uncomfortable. |
Uh, I think they are called Ice Bears...This is a parallel universe. Jeez.
:p Yeah, the whole thing was hilarious. I do want to go and read the series though. |
I think if I was in the Golden Compass, my companion animal would be a cowardly lion.
|
Space Jam? Nothing good has been done with the Looney Tunes since Chuck Jones stopped doing them in the 60's...and some of his stuff was starting to suck at the end too.
But about Juno... |
i never liked loony toons
the golden compass..i thought that was a seuqel to the narnia movie |

DO ITTTT!!! |
I saw Juno also on the 25th and I thought it was good. Way different than Little Miss Sunshine and not so dry, unles you are talking about the ''Bleek'' character. I did smirk at the sonic youth reference and laugh at some of the one-liners. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

the truth. -- furthering the kidnapping of this thread, all i remember about space jam, besides been horrorized about the whole concept, is that every jerkdork in my school wanted the soundtrack and they ended up doing some choreography to one of those songs. ugh! |

Michael Cera is naturally hilariously dorky. Juno "I like how you don't even try to be cool, you just are" Bleeker "I do try, really hard." |

I like both Michael Jordan and Warner Bros. Looney Tunes toons, but I've never made it through very much of that movie. I also have zero interest in the Harry Potter movies or books. The only Potter movie I've seen much of is the first one which I watched thirty or forty minutes of in total. I can't even watch any of the others for more than a few minutes due to the lack of interest. In case you didn't already know, the Harry Potter franchise has made more money worldwide than Star Wars movies or James Bond or Lord of the Rings, Batman, Spider-Man or any other serialized motion pictures with multiple blockbuster sequels. Maybe Peter Jackson finally signing on to do The Hobbit can change that, but it doesn't seem likely. |
