what to do in art class?
 

i dont know what i should do with the kids today
any suggestions?

Wax paper, nicely colored leaves, and a steam iron will keep them busy...if they're little kids. Halloween pics drawn with charcoal are cool too.

man class was weird today
i got this new kid in, and his mom was standing around as he got comfortable..then one of the other kids(not her kid) said something about "i dont wanna offend anyone but im the smartest in my class" and then the mom said to him "no one heard you to be offended..what did u say?..." then he said it again and she started questioning him and made him feel like shit, like it was some sort of battle between her kids

it was so weird and like something out of a movie where the momma calls out to her son "hey yo billy, whats the square root of 400" and he responds and she gives a smug look to the other people..
she was weird.

sounds scary alien, that would creep me out. How old are the kids you teach?

As the teacher, you're in charge of the classroom, and you should have politely but firmly told her to leave. Her presence and behavior is disruptive to the class routine. If she failed to cooperate, I would have requested help from the principal.

teach monoprints with acrylics and plexiglass, and maybe silkscreening if your school can afford it

color theory
study the color wheel, have students do copies of famous paintings on a small scale using gouache and brush changing the color scheme, class critique later

life drawing
blind-countour drills - w/students at easels with paper & charcoal sticks & kneaded rubber erasers rendering from a still-life, do not allow them to make a mark while looking at the paper

drawing
teach Picasso's broken line
teach Warhol's dashed-&-dotted line technique w/ink & brush

written or oral reports of approved artist biographies/films about artists

iv done printing and life drawing with them. we did shirts but i couldnt afford to get 10 silk screens.

How about an art history lesson? All artists need to understand something about what's gone before, no?

these kids have a hard time sitting still whislt they just have to paint...art history will kill them

oh yeh its primary school kids.
and yeh its true i do get treated as a baby sitter somtimes, but i like kids so its cool.

again, graffiti is an under-represented artform. yr kids will be unlikely to see any original warhol's hanging around, but graffiti can be found everywhere.

you can teach them that art should be about "just doing it".

It all depends on what age group you're teaching. It looks like you have kids that are under the age of ten, so I'd probably do some potato printing, straw painting or make a paper-mâché sculpture.
