Your worst SY purchase
This is going to open up a right old can of worms, isn't it?
Mine is the Thurston Moore / Marco Fusinato collaboration "TM/MF", which was the "soundtrack" to an art installation where Thurston improvised ten one-minute tracks (shoving the guitar against an amp, laying it on the floor, sliding a bottle along the strings), while Fusinato used the "music" as inspiration for ten paintings, each created usng a different medium, within the length of time that the track played. Each of the ten paintings, so far as I can remember, consisted of a large red square. Each of Thurston's improvisations consisted of a fucking racket. I think you probably had to be there. ![]() http://www.physicsroom.org.nz/log/archive/12/rhodes/ |
RR?
|
Yeah, I don't know about getting into SY side projects.
Unless there are some absolutely necessary ones that I should pick up? |
Well I'd say TV Shit, even though I like it (I wouldn't say it's the worst, but the "least good"), because I paid 15€ for it (around 18$ I think)
|
experimental jet set for $2.
fuck that cd! |
Can we stop with the EJSTNS-bashing, please?
Most of the releases I've bought up to now have been great, though I guess 'The Destroyed Room' was kinda boring. I listened to it in the bath a few times and that was about it. |
Quote:
Yeah, this is the one. total rubbish. I'm glad I didn't pay much for it. |
You're a very silly person, then. RR is a good album.
|
Uhhh, probably Daydream or Sister. What trash!
|
i'm not too keen on any of the free kitten stuff i've bought.
|

hahaha ...but that's known as resting on your laurels... (wanna rightthiss a wya) hay but thats restin on yr laurels th;'/FDS there are many side projects that are worth it, & ...on the other handd |
Rather Ripped probably.

HEY! The In The Fishtank session is very good!
|
Quote:
Yes, it's one of the better ones. If that one rubs you the wrong way, maybe no side-profjects are for you. |
i love the SYR's and the free kitten albums and psychic hearts, just not "in the fishtank"
|
i absolutely love tv shit.
|

same here. |
That would be two tickets to the SY show at the McPool in Brooklyn last Summer. Ended up being on the other side of the United States in Mid-AUGUST and when it became obvious that I wouldn't make the show I mailed my friend back east the tickets which ended up not making it to his mailbox.
Total waste. |
Quote:
I think "what a waste" is more appropriate. perhaps, "total trash"? |
tv shit is fab and in the fishtank 9. is a stunning record.
out of side projects my least favourite is the same as sway's, "not me" w/thurston and tom surgal, although i don't regret buying it at all, it's just a little dull. out of main releases it is probably Rather Ripped. |
Quote:
What the fuck?!?!?!?!?! NO WAY! |
I love TV Shit and In the Fishtank, and that's all off the "semi-related" stuff I have, save for Psychic Hearts...
I need money, is the problem... However, I don't care much for Washing Machine... three great tracks and a slew of mediocre tracks makes it their worst album by far. I don't regret buying it, though, it was the last album I needed. |

Yeah, that performance sounds pretty bogus, all right. |
TV Shit because it is way to short for what I paid for it back in the day at the shitty record store in the mall.
|
i have to agree with screamingskull: in The Fishtank is ridiculous. other than the last track, it kinda sucked.
|
please just leave me (my desmond paul).
|
probably "Sister".

worst thing of sonic youth's I ever bought, and I own a ton of the side stuff and solo and every album and all that, is
EJST&NS worst SY album ever. boring experimenta jet set trash and no star sucks ass. anyone want to sell me their kali yug express CD???| I will trade for my copy of EJST&NS blue vinyl! ejst&ns sucks! |
Quote:
Isn't that a 10" from france? or am I thinking of something else. The only thing I can think of is that Rodney and the Tube Tops single. SY just don't let me down! |
Why has no-one mention the Dim Stars yet? Utter rubbish.
|
I really love TV Shit actually. Dunno about In the Fishtank though.
Worst SY purchase for me were probably some crappy compilations that had one SY track on it which then later ended up on The Destroyed Room or Dirty/Goo deluxe. Or that Christmas compilation with one SY track on it. Got it for literally 1 cent off of ebay, but it's really terrible. Please Just Leave me (my Paul Desmond) is probably the worst Thurston album I own, although I haven't listened to Kapotte Muziek or MRRR more than twice either. Some of his collaborations are really dull as well: Backbeat soundtrack, Dim Stars, to name some. Can't really think of a Lee album that's really let me down, but my least favourites are probably Clouds and Bouquet. |

damn it, will you stop posting 1 minute before me? |
I like all the free kitten stuff.
thedim stars is a bit dull but will anyone trade me KALI YUG express for my blue Experimental Jet Set Trash & No Star on blue vinyl????? come on. let's do this thing. |
the backbeat soundtrack ios actually quite good to me.
I like the oldies. |
Quote:
Because that record kicked ass! |
For me, it would be a rancid burger that I bought at one of their shows last year. It sucked, homeboy!
|
Please Just Leave Me...
only got it a few weeks ago but listened to it once and has been subsequently shelved indefinitely.. wasn't too into Piece for Yvonne Rainer initially, but repeated spins have revealed it to be of some worth.. other than that, the worst Youth thing I got is Sonic Starpower, an atrocious quality bootleg CD I picked up in a used record store |
