Great One Album Wonders

Those bands that produced one killer album only to have everything else they did slide into the "who cares?" bin.

LifeDistortion 04.07.2007 02:12 AM

Well, this is easy since they only made one proper album but...

The Sex Pistols- Never Mind the Bollocks

Massassinated 04.07.2007 02:42 AM

Comus - First utterance

MellySingsDoom 04.07.2007 04:38 AM

Mad River - s/t
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Satanas

Pookie 04.07.2007 04:52 AM

Suicidal Tendencies

If you'd heard any of them, you'd know:) .

The first (eponymous).

When I worked in a record shop, it was in the days when we just displayed the covers and kept the actual records behind the counter in card sleeves. You would write the band and the name of the album on the sleeve, and if a record was self-titled, you'd write 'eponymous' in place of the title. This was so that it was clear that somebody hadn't just forgotten to write the title.

One girl who worked there never grasped the idea and didn't know why we wrote eponymous on some sleeves. And then REM released an album called Eponymous. She was completely screwed then!

atari 2600 04.07.2007 08:48 AM

That's great ha ha aha ha.

demonrail666 04.07.2007 08:52 AM

I worked in a record shop with this guy who took great effort telling everyone that Cap't Beefheart went in the C section, and that Alice Cooper went in A. He was a total alphabet nazi.

sarramkrop 04.07.2007 08:58 AM

I think Fra Lippo Lippi had one good album and that was about it. The Primitives.

demonrail666 04.07.2007 08:59 AM

The first Sugarcubes album was (and still is) great. After that. forget-about-it.

What's wrong with that.

Our manager was a Genesis fan, and we used to wind him up by putting Phil Collins solo albums in the Genesis section. May not seem like a big deal, but he used to go a nice lobster colour.

Pookie 04.07.2007 09:10 AM

Television.

MellySingsDoom 04.07.2007 02:11 PM

I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned the first Stone Roses LP. Lots of people still seem to have love for that. Little ole me thinks it's one of the most over-rated rock LPs of all time. Sure, it's not bad (not like Sisters of Mercy bad), but it's not that bleedin' good either, John Squire or no John Squire.

Downward Spiral taught me how to hate.

Sonic Youth 37 04.07.2007 04:23 PM

Living In America-The Sounds
Fever To Tell-YYYs (Show your Bones did NOT impress me. It was too different, without any of their charm. Their EPs before Fever To Tell were good, but those don't count as albums)

The Lung 04.07.2007 04:29 PM

Bitch Magnet - Ben Hur

Pookie 04.07.2007 05:34 PM

Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.07.2007 07:33 PM

Happy Go Licky- Will Play

LifeDistortion 04.08.2007 02:51 PM

The Queers- A Day Late, A Dollar Short (When they were a hardcore band.)

Jt 04.08.2007 06:30 PM

Oasis - Definitely Maybe

atsonicpark 04.08.2007 07:11 PM

limp bizkit - 3 dolla bill y'all$

Washing Machine 04.08.2007 07:30 PM

Umm theres a few:

Spice Girls - Spice
My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (Dont even talk to me about The Black Fucking Parade)
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (not that the music before or after wasn't brilliant, but as for cohesive albums...)
Dvorak - 'From the new world' (not techically an album I know but I love this piece but cant stand the rest of his stuff)
Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra (same as above really, this is a thread that goes through a lot of my taste in classical music, I only tend to like one or two pieces of any composer - Unless its Branca, Shoenberg, Cage or Shostakovich at which point I can only worship)

Cardinal Rob 04.08.2007 07:39 PM

Suicidal Tendencies are awful overall.

Lots of bands did grow progressively worse. Descendents' Bonus Fat ain't too bad at all. Suicide's first album, obviously, the coolest thing recorded, the second is still great but definitely a let down, A Way of Life was just crude. I'll also drop Entertainment! by Gang of Four while I'm on a roll.

timtimtim 04.08.2007 07:39 PM

Cardinal Rob 04.08.2007 08:04 PM

Everyneurotic 04.08.2007 08:08 PM

Cardinal Rob 04.08.2007 08:24 PM

I think I'm going to scream!

Everyneurotic 04.08.2007 08:26 PM

the first soulfly album

Washing Machine 04.08.2007 08:37 PM

System of a Down are not a Nu-Metal band they are too good to be classed with that rubbish

Pookie 04.08.2007 08:44 PM

Fudge Tunnel - Hate Songs In E Minor

atsonicpark 04.08.2007 08:46 PM

whaat? creep diets was great too!

Everyneurotic 04.08.2007 08:49 PM

all that talk about fudge tunnel reminded me of:

nailbomb - proud to commit commercial suicide

another, argueable:

the locust - plague soundscapes (haven't heard the new one)

more:

mindless self indulgence - frankenstein girls...
the mars volta - deloused in the comatorium (not counting the tremulant ep)
poison the well - you come before you
the used s/t

I don't agree. I think it was a pretty average album, and The Complicated Futility of Ignorance was just bad.
