Rok`n`Röl Hall Of Syg
I donīt think rock should never has put into museum or any kind of institute, but because everybody seems to think Rīr HoF suck a way or another, maybe we should here make a true list of best RīNīR-artists? 20 best? One point to each of everybodyīs list, I can count the points in the end. And I mean true RīN`r artists, that has made pure dirty bad ass RīN R, not a list of favourite artists. And even RīN`r came from blues, I have left away artists I think are more blues than RīNīR.
Hereīs mine (not in any order, I try to put them somekind of age-order): 1. Elvis (of course) 2. Eddie Cochran 3. Chuck Berry 4. the Rolling Stones 5. the Who 6. Jimi Hendrix (If you have doubts to him, just listen his version of Johnny B. Goode) 7. Johnny Winter (more blues of course, but after Jimi & Chuck no-one else has made such a dirty version of Johnny B., also almost whole Johnny Winter And Live is just pure r`n`r, there are many rock pieces also almost his all albums) 8. Deep Purple 9. Led Zeppelin 10. Black Sabbath 11. the Stooges 12. MC5 13. New York Dolls 14. the Ramones 15. Ac/Dc 16. Damned 17. the Birthday Party 18. Sonic Youth 19. Jon Spencer 20. 22 Pistepirkko (Just have to put one Finnish band into my list, theyīve made really great, dirty RīnR). Yeah, I know thereīs many great artists missing. |
That is just the regular HOF list.. SYG are too hipster for that list, SYG list would be bands nobod has ever heard of or even should have

but all the trolling aside I was about to put Sleater-Kinney's last album on my list. that album fucking rocks. when I think of stereotypical rock n' roll albums I think of ones that are simple, stripped down and aggressive. I think those 20 albums are fantastic, fit the above description and I stand by them (not to mention that Jennifer Herrema, Adris Hoyos and Julie Cafritz are all involved in the making of 3 of the records).

Hereīs few "not-white" great rock (loud) albums:
the Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced Death: ...For the Whole World to See Bad Brains: Rock For Light Living Color: Timeīs Up Fishbone: Give a Monkey a Brain and heīll swear heīs the center of the universe. As Band Called Death-document shows, there was racism behind that, the rock was so white specially in the sixties & seventies. Nowdays the colour of the skin doesn`t of course matter in rock, but as said, true rock has mostly disappeared. I just wondered why even seventies punk was mostly white? Many punks liked reaggae and was anti-racists, but still most of the known punk bands were white... |
because musical instruments are expensive, amps are expensive, and rehearsal space is expensive?
and also because in the inner city, while white folks did punk, hispanics and African americans created Hip Hop. |

Punk only became "popular" because the British have a desperate need for new acts to hype up, and punk was what caught the eye of their media for about 5 months.

There have always been black folks playing in bands its just the "mainstream" that is largely whitewashed and for the obvious reasons of structural racism. Further even in the underground unfortunately scenes are as affected by this structural racism so we only find more adventurous people bridge the gap. However to be sure black folks still play in bands. Whether blues, or jazz, or rock or even metal and punk. Some of my favorite underground bands are from the afropunk scene

T&B, funk music is not rock n roll. it is it's own monster. I try to define rock n roll as riff-based. a band without guitars like Morphine is rock n roll (or "low-rock" as Mr. Sandman would describe it, RIP) because the tunes are based on riffs.
other genre's, funk, ska, reggae, eetc, while sharing instrumentation with rock and cohabitating with rock, are not about the riff. James Brown was never rock. he was a soul singer who helped create the genre of FUNK. |

A lot of late Marley out put was "rocked up" by British record guys who wanted to make reggae sound more rock, and less dependent on riddim.

Reggae was invented from upping the tempo on rock steady which was just strumming old rock and roll standards in a bit of a different pattern. All the early groups in Jamaica were getting their music from New Orleans radio stations. They listened to American rock and roll and soul music. It saturates their sound and their choice of covers. To be sure, Burning Spear didn't work with any of those British producers and listen to the lead guitar in Spear albums or stageshows and tell me THAT isn't rock and roll! |
rocksteady was a variant on ska. It all comes from R&B and soul music, not rock n roll

Not so fast yo.. early Rock and Roll as definitely a huge influence on the early 1960s rock steady-ska-reggae scene! Indeed, dividing those three into a different genre is a bit disengenuous because in actuality it was THE SAME musicians making all three!
You are right about many things, but to negate the influence of rock and roll I think is off-base here. Its not that rock an roll was the major influence, but it was still very relevant. |
in my understanding that's what differentiates a lot of reggae/ska/rock-steady from the more outre forms of later dub, much more indebted to the physicality of rock as opposed to an exploration of its intangibility, ie tubby, scientist et al.

the differences between rock steady, ska, and reggae are in the guitar strum patterns, aspects of the bass lines, and the tempo. The melodies, chord changes, and structures are the same, indeed the players of instrument in those original bands are were all the same people!
Rock steady is a bit slower, ska is a bit faster, and reggae is in the middle sort of combining both with a different strum pattern. |
