could be better. turns out cat power isn't until october, so when i went to buy the tickets i found they weren't even on sale yet. ended up wasting my money on a shirt i don't think i'll wear when i had enough for the national show. but i have no school monday, i just remembered. meaning i have one more day to do my 12 page essay. SCORE!! how are you? |
Aww, that sucks about cat power. But yess! You just reminded me about monday. So one extra day for me to stay in montreal! And 12 page essay? Ewww, my school is sitting on this board all day. Our workload is absolutely nil this year I have barely participated and it's my second week.
Other than that, I applied at a fair trade coffee shop and I have a good chance of working there! I'm so happy and I hope I start soon. |
man my school doesn't start till next tuesday
|
Same for me... Only I thought it was farther away. Fucking shit, I'm not going to have any time to hang out with friends before school... FUCK MY FUCKING MOUTH, GOD DAMN IT.

This remark really does get truer by the day. Last night was so awesome. This may turn into a blog but whatever, you can just skip past it. So yesterday morning I rode the bus into town with all of the old people to meet my big friend Mike who I had planned to see 'Surf's Up' with- as we had commemorated August 27th as 'Penguin Day'. Of course, The Odeon cinema was closed, so we couldn't see 'Surf's Up'. We decided to walk to the other side of town to go to the FACT cinema, where we saw 'Evan Almighty' instead. With our faith in evangelism renewed, we decided to go to McDonalds and get happy meals. We found Sukie at the bus stop outside of Lewis's department store. Mike's cousins band were playing at the Barfly (music venue) so we went to see them, it was a free show with about 7653759 bands on the bill. Then Mike had to go home so Sukie and I danced the night away to some decent bands, I had a great time. I also met k-krack's english twin. And Tom. |
Murray Street is my least-loved Sonic Youth album.
|
And you're my least-loved boardie from Hartford. Which says a lot since you're the first i'm aware of.
|
Over time will Murray Street hold up the way EVOL, Daydream Nation, or Goo have? Does it really compare to Sonic Youth's work on Sonic Nurse or Rather Ripped? I think the late 90s and early 00s (A Thousand Leaves through Murray Street) were something of a low-point for the band. Still better than anything under the sun, mind you, but not Sonic Youth at their best. Besides that, I didn’t like that Jim O’Rourke became an “official” member of the band. I much prefer the classic line up. Heaven help me if Mark Ibold becomes the new official new member.
For the record, Experimental Jet Set is the band’s best sounding album. Even if you don’t like the songs, you have to admit they SOUND damn good. Psychic Hearts is also a great album. |

a) you need us to tell you if you'll like murray street later on? b) too bad since jimo was a real musician, besides, you don't have a say on what the band does. c) good for you. d) what's thurston's favorite color? |
I can help with that last one. A dude on the net tells me that in the May 1937 edition of Fats Waller's own Groove Organ journal, Kim expressed concern at Thurston's insomnia. "It's all down to not being able to decide on a favourite colour", she said. "He says he likes yellow, and cyan, but he says that before he commits himself to one of those colours, he'd like to see what a mauvy-green-scarlet mix would look like. He's obsessed with this mauvy-green-scaret thing; it keeps him awake at night, it's like an obsession. I say to him, 'for heaven's sake, Thurston, play the trumpet or something and take your mind of it, but he can't. I'm getting worried abut it." Asked by Waller himself where the obsession came from ,and if Kim had any food on her, she said "no I haven't, actually, I thought you' be doing the hospitality. The colour issue is to with Lee, becuase he invented that orangey-cerrisse-brown paint that sells so well. It made Thurston want a piece of the home decoration market too"
I don't know if he's made up his mind in the intervening 70 years. |

It's my favourite. It's magical, in my opinion. |

I liked Wowee Zowee. |
I love Murray Street, even though I like Nurse more, I think they are both pretty classic. At any rate... why would every single SY album hold up, and not some great albums from the late 90s and 00's? Because one guy on the internet thinks they aren't their best work?
Plus, Murray is the first album proper of theirs I have on vinyl! Can't wait to get more.:) |
When I listen to Murray Street, it's as if everything on the LP is in harmony with everything else. It's lovely.
