Walked in to the record store by school yesterday, they said it was on backorder. dammit! |
Review from Drowned In Sound. I like the SY/Beatles comparisons made here.
|
it's now in the king fu store http://sonicyouth.kungfustore.com/ca...he-tides-lee36
Vinyl includes coupon code for download of entire album. ^^^ My copy didn't include a download coupon.... |

Are you in the US or Europe? All copies in North America should have download coupons. If you don't see it at first I'd check to see if it is stuck in the gatefold crease, that happens sometimes. If not then e-mail me at dave at matadordirect dot com and we can get you hooked up with a code. |

I'm in the UK and ordered it from amazon.co.uk. I guessed it was a US / Europe thing as is often the case.... |

The thing about that website is that if, for instance, "Xtina" was the only Lee track on a new Sonic Youth album, they'd say it was the stand-out and give the album an 8.2. Pitchfork is a yeast infection. But I have to say I'm surprised they aren't praising the album. As for Lee vs. Thurston, I think Thurston's album would have been better if it had been more electric, but as of now I prefer Tide. |
I really hear 1990 era REM at one point during the first song. reminds of "LOW"
|
I want mine with bonus tracks!!!
|
Are there different bonus tracks for different regions?
|

|
the american itunes has the bonus track too.
|
Including the Tower Records Demo CDR, these are all the bonus tracks:
Stranded (Demo) Off The Wall (Demo) Angles (Demo) Fire Island (Demo) Lost (Demo) Shouts (Demo) Waiting On A Dream (Demo) Xtina As I Knew Her (Demo) |
I want all.
|
stu, did you check various itunes countries?
|
Quote:
no, why? did i miss some? |
Just got the demos from UK itunes - I was expecting solo versions, stripped down, just Lee and guitar but they are band versions, presumably with Lee on multi-tracked guitars and Steve on drums. Please tell me there is a way of getting the other demos as these are excellent!

Lovely!
Got an sms from the postoffice about my package is here! Can't wait til I get home, only 1 hour left! :D EDIT: (a few hours later) I love it! Super great record, Lee you rule! i have a feeling I will spin this one a lot these coming weeks. I still havent ordered the new Disappears LP : o |
I am liking it more with every listen, but there is no excuse for that "alone out in the middle of the world"/ "just some other girl"line. The rest is just great and sounds smazhing on vinyl. I can already tell it will define my summer.
But am I the only one who feels a little sad listening to it? Sometimes it's like the guitars are just crying out for Thurston. The character of the album is so reminiscent of SY. At least Demolished Thoughts maintained some sonic distance. Favorite tracks change every time through, but I think xtina as I knew her will I be the fan favorite in general. |
I am very glad that we got the vinyl. But gosh, I'm still kinda back and forth about the album itself. :( I was really counting on being blown away, but it's not quite doing it... I actually feel kind of guilty.

The song Waiting on a Dream insanely takes off after the first drum crash. What a reccorded moment LEE!
|
bought the LP today, this album kicks arse! Always wanted a whole album of Lee songs. Looking forward to the show in LA, future Lee song records.

gotta agree with you here 100%! im not a kinda guy who likes to diss anything sy related (actually i dont like to diss anything on the internet), but this album is kinda hit n miss. It has its moments, but its mostly very conservative rock music. it lacks of energy and originality, while thurston on demolished thoughts, showed his musical visions from a whole different perspectiv |
I hate to say it but Pitchfork gave it a pretty solid review. A 5.8 though? Not a chance. It is a very solid album & while it isn't groundbreaking or beyond words amazing it is definitely a grower with A LOT of beautiful moments. Lee #2 should have let us all know what we were going to get. This is just good old rock n roll made by a great musician & songwriter. Perfect summer time record. Even though the lyrics are not typical Lee abstractions I think they fit in with the record even though I will admit sometimes they are a bit silly. I also have to say that if this weren't made by Lee I don't think I would have given it much of a chance but I am glad I did. This is going to be the perfect summer soundtrack for me. Thank you Lee, look forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

I´d like to know who you think can write an objective opionion about the music? a Robot? Because it´s always subjective with the music. And about that Pitchfork review, I think it is very poor way to start with Thurston`s and Kim`s divorce. (What it´s got to do with Lee´s music?) |

Fuck that Pitchfork review, and as a whole... fuck Pitchfork. I didn't even read it, I have nothing to do with that tripe those internet nerds paint all over someone's hard work. Lee's solo album is his first true "song" oriented outing and if you understood anything about Lee's tastes in music, the direction and sound, its clear to understand what the final product would sound like.

Are you just referring to the 3-chord guitar riff, or Lee's vocal? I've always been surprised by how many people ask if I'm playing R.E.M. when a "Lee song" comes on an SY record. "Karen Koltrane" in particular, numerous people have told me it sounds like Michael Stipe... Anyway, my local shop wins - they got BTTATT in on Friday and I probably played it three times that night. Some of the negative comments in this thread had me curious, but this record exceeds my expectations completely. He assembled a great group of musicians - you can rarely go wrong with Nels Cline's touch, Steve is naturally flawless, and I love hearing fluid, driving basslines behind these songs - the whole group mixes quite well! Pretty much every song had burned itself into my mind by the 2nd listen. I think it does a good job of blending his rock, pop, folk, and noise influences, and while it's hard to avoid occasionally sounding like Sonic Youth when you have half of the band playing, these songs cover a lot of musical territory. "Hammer Blows" is even stunning enough to satisfy my initial expectation that the album would be mostly acoustic, and the rest are pretty much high energy rock with a melodic slant or sick guitar fury (often in the same song). Oh, and every song is sung by Lee Ranaldo. What's not to like? :p |
Yeah I remember talking to one of my buds about how Lees voice was so cool and unique. He said it kinda sounded like REM too. I had never even thought of that but I can kinda see it.
|
Waiting on a Dream from 0:18 on really reminds me of 1990 era REM. Low
|
ditto everything chris said
|
this record is phenomenal..great album to listen to in bed.
really dig the song about Cristina..great riffs, bass and classic SS beats |
Just got my cd today (LP coming tomorrow, yay!).
Laughed reading the sticker "The first rock album from..." Chewbacca + Nero d'Avola, super combination. Had no idea Cody helped with the graphic layout. Cody, make more tapes! I love the two I have. Will give it a proper listen soon. |
Who's Xstina?
