Founded by Emperor Menilek in 1887. More than 21,000 hectares in area, Addis Ababa is situated in the foothills of the 3,000 meters Entoto Mountains. Located at the center of Shewa reign, the city stands at the very heart of Ethiopia and enjoys excellent connections with the entire country economic zone. Addis Ababa with a population of more than 4.5 million people, is not only the political capital but also the economic and social nerve center of Ethiopia. By the late 1950’s Addis Ababa was recognized as the unofficial capital of Africa, and thus was made the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in 1958 and later in 1963 chosen as headquarters of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

 

Wide tree-lined streets, fine architecture, glorious weather, the incongruity of donkey trains trotting along the boulevards make Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, a delightful place to explore. It is a city of surprises characterized by remarkable diversity and contrasts

As fars Ethiopia goes, all I can say is that Mulatu Astatke has made some great music....

in prenzlauer berg. on prenzlauer allee actually. its very hot here, very hot. there has not been rain for weeks apart from a torrential 15 minute downpour a few days ago.

any plans to visit?

I think I am too accustomed / spoiled to Los Angeles weather, I would freeze my ass off anywhere else. Plus, it is a great city, regardless of all the earthquakes and transportation flaws.

I will definitely visit Berlin again at some point. At the moment I have vague plans to visit Munich at some point in the future. My friend just got a job there but doesn't start for another 3 months (not quite in time for Oktoberfest :( ) but once he's got a place there I'll be over in a flash.

When I saw sunburned were playing in West Germany I did think "hmmm" for a moment but I'll make do with seeing them in Bristol and/or London I think. I do want to re-visit Berlin sooner rather than later though.
