one more detail to add to this, the rich guy's name is "tenoch" (an aztec name), which plays a role in the movie, cos all the real indians are living in misery while he (literally, no?) jerks off in the pool.

there's a lot of subtext in the movie which is i think what makes it great. the mommy fucking is only a conceit, in a way...

Oh yeah, that makes me think of how it was for my mom growing up. She is a native indian from Mexico.

the girl at the end goes to die among the indians who are it appears the only decent people in the whole movie.

years later though (the narrator tells us) tourism invades the area.

really a lot of layers there-- maybe watch it again, he he he. if you can get the spanish because subtitles often leave out a lot.

The thing is, movies like records are pretty much personal choices. All the ones that i've listed don't tell me much about anything, but that doesn't mean that i think that some of them are bad movies per se.

the first film i thought of when i saw this thread was the da vinci code.

the da vinci code wasnt rated highly it was a bomb.. this seems to be a thread more about what movies you like than over rated movies.

Robert Rodriguez's "Desperado" - me and demonrail666 went to see this the week it came out in the UK, and we both fell asleep through it. Afterwards, we were wondering whether we saw the same film that the critics saw, such was their pants-wetting enthusiasm for it.

these films arnt over-rated..noone likes them that much for them to be over-rated.

desperado was a hollywood-style remake of his wonderful "el mariachi" which is a fun fun fun little movie made with little money. if you haven't seen it, check it out, it's nothing "deep" but it's a good show of what you can do with little dinero and lots of resourcefulness.

i think desperado suffered from many problems, mainly cheesiness, sure-- but also rodriguez famously had troubles working in a studio because he was accustomed to doing everything pretty much by himself. having a large crew and millions of dolars actually worked against him. he adapted later, but he also eventually built his own studio in texas where he's made things like sin city & so on. he is a fun action movie guy; not my favorite director, but he has a talent for certain things. desperado was just ridiculous and unwatchable.


that's rated too high! they should have a rating of 1.1 or about.

catwomen is rated a 3.2...in comparison to catwoman these other films are rated pretty fairly.

yes but light sleeper is rated at 6.7 so in comparison to that the da vinci cack is rated too high.
