noisereductions 11.17.2012 09:22 AM

why do you think they'd choose to just overdub extra vocals onto one song on a live album though?

punkbrokeme 11.17.2012 10:13 AM

Love the clip of "Into the Groove" at the start of "I love her all the time". Took me by surprise

noisereductions 11.17.2012 12:34 PM

has anyone compared "I Love Her All The Time" on here to the original bootleg?

Chris Lawrence 11.17.2012 03:07 PM

I listened to the version that was shared on Dime years ago and I don't hear any double tracked vocal. Don't have the new release to compare, though.

odd though right? The idea that they'd pick one song on a live album to add vox that weren't originally there?

CHOUT 11.17.2012 11:59 PM

I listened to the old bootleg...only one vocal...sounds like the in tune vocal was overdubbed later.

Chris Lawrence 11.18.2012 01:47 AM

This will be interesting to hear!

I can only guess that T's vocal was too out of tune for an an official release...perhaps the overdub was even recorded recently? I just think that it makes the out of tune vocal even more noticeable. And being properly in tune hasn't exactly been the band's focus over 30 years...I find it a very strange move.
Still a great release though!

yes, fantastic release. I love this album!

More than anything I'm just curious about the real decision behind the overdub. It's an interesting mystery haha.

noisereductions:

it seems they did it b/c the original vocal was very very out of tune. i remember thinking that when i had the anarchy at st marks pl boot in the 90s. obviously sy aren't ones to be too picky about in and out of tune but i guess this one was too much for thurston.

Rob Instigator 11.21.2012 12:12 PM

especially if he is still trying to pick up chicks...

yeah.

Still strikes me as odd... for SY I mean.

So where do you all think the vocal came from? New take?

No, Thurston stopped sounding like that in 1990 when he finally finished puberty.

Mortte Jousimo 11.21.2012 11:55 PM

Got this yesterday, itīs just sooo great, pure Sonik Magik!

It is very easily heard how much better drummer Steve is than Bob. Specially Death Valley, Ghost Bitch & Brother James are just murder! Only song where I like Bobīs drumming more is Kill Yr Idols, but this version is not bad. I also like a lot a Flower version, it differs from the original studio version a lot, but I love them both as much! I really donīt like that overdub in I love her at all, itīs sound so unnatural. I think it would have been better solution to leave it out, because the rest material sound so 100 % live. And Iīm not totally against the overdubs in live recording, for example Zappa has succeeded them.

I've always felt this way...I love Steve's drumming on everything except this song...I like the straightforward beat Bert played.

noisereductions 11.22.2012 09:40 AM

"Flower" is the standout for me on this album. I think it's better than the studio version.

SS's drumming is ridiculous right out the gate on "Halloween" even. It's subtle maybe but proof of just how awesome he was in thinking outside the box on that material. I also love the version of "Burning Spear" -- especially the drums.

I really don't mind the overdubbed vox. I think it sounds cool even if not natural.

krischanski 11.23.2012 12:53 PM

Today I finally found the way to my record dealer, but he did not have it there. Is it already available in Germany? (Some mail orders talk about the end of November.)

stu666 11.26.2012 01:15 PM

I pre-orderd the LP from Midheaven and the CD from KungFu. Got the cd last week (even though I ordered it after the LP) and today I got a package from Midheaven but they have also sent me the CD.

radarmaker 11.26.2012 03:47 PM

Been waiting until I can pick this up in person at the weekend, but am really looking forward to it, especially reading the above comments - it captures possibly my favourite live period of the band.
Interested to see how it matches up to Walls Have Ears which, in the right frame of mind, is my #1 SY elpee...

that sucks!

Midheaven never even responded to my email about why it shipped a week later than listed. Pfft. Guess I won't be dealing with them anymore.

back when they announced a live album from 85 coming out I had really hoped that it was going to be a legit remastered CD release of Walls.

Gary Black 11.26.2012 05:47 PM

It's freakin awesome when the proper tape takes over in Song1. Such a great album. I'm really hoping they milk the archives and release loads of shows. One from every tour to start!!

whorefrost 11.26.2012 06:57 PM

Picked up the double LP today. Liking it. A lot.

EDIT: forgot to mention, the double tracked Thurston vocal on I Love Her All the Time sounds fucking cool, would be interested to know why they did that

whorefrost 11.27.2012 08:41 AM

Folks, the David Keenan review has arrived and it is mighty favourable:

"Massively-potent archival live set from Sonic Youth, captured straight to four track during the Bad Moon Rising>Evol era: I was a big collector of Sonic Youth live tapes back in the day and my favourite era was definitely the Evol shows in the mid-80s so this set is a spectacular unearthing, capturing the group at a key moment of transition, with Bob Bert vacating the drum stool in favour of Steve Shelley and the group moving from the strung out American gothic of Bad Moon/Death Valley into the tortuous metal drones of Evol. Buncha highlights here: the first half of the opening “Halloween” is missing from the masters so they segue from an audience recording into the master and it works great, like a slow, psychedelic zoom from crude cassette noise into hi-fi drone; Kim’s tracks are uniformly great, with particular highlights being “Brave Men Run”, “Ghost Bitch”, “Brother James”, “Secret Girl” (earliest live recording of that amazing track) and “Flower”; a reminder of what an amazing twin guitar tag team Ranaldo and Moore were, crashing arcs of feedback into each other and playing with the kind higher-mind string relativities of Verlaine and Lloyd in Television; the spectacular run-out jam on “Expressway To Your Skull” which makes explicit just how much of a debt NZ drone owes to this one momentous track; the appearance of “Kat ‘n’ Hat”, a rare/unrecorded gem; the genesis of that eerie tapes/downtuned guitar style that would dominate the live Evol sets, here sounding particularly feral. This is a timely reminder of what an amazing band Sonic Youth were, especially in their pre-Daydream incarnation, and also what a hip period the 80s were in terms of underground guitar action. Back in the day you just hadda be into Sonic Youth, even if you were an indie dud, and listening to this wild avant rock it’s pretty miraculous they were ever so popular, even if most of the kids I knew at the time went for “Starpower” or “Bubblegum” over “Marilyn Moore “ or “Expressway” and breathed a sigh of relief when they finally dropped Daydream Nation. But for me the heroic period of Sonic Youth is probably 84-87 and this fantastic release perfectly captures the revolutionary arc of the times. Been a bunch of killer archival releases this year but this one goes right to the top of the pile. Comes with a download. Highly recommended!" Đ Volcanic Tongue 2012

Nice! Ahhhh, Christmas morning is gonna be fun ;)

another 12.01.2012 12:02 PM

found a pic of them supposedly from smart bar, doing ghost bitch:

EVOLghost 12.01.2012 04:08 PM

Is that what it's from? I was wondering what song at the time would require an acoustic guitar...

EVOLghost 12.01.2012 04:57 PM

well I'll be damned....

When I heard Ghost Bitch in BMR, it really didnīt come in my mind that there is also acoustic guitar. But then I saw also some old version of it from youtube (maybe from Gila Monster Jamboree). BTW is that picture same that is in the Smart Bar vinyl-version gatefold (I havenīt seen the cd-version, so I donīt know are there same pictures as in the vinyl)?

Holy shit, I've forgot about this one!
Been in a fucking hole the last weeks :S

noisereductions 12.02.2012 09:37 AM

oh it is Live at Stache's! I had a feeling cuz of the weird lighting effects. Yeah I have that on DVDR.

CHOUT 12.02.2012 11:02 PM

That pic is inside the sleeve of the album...Upon seeing it, I thought it would've made a good cover photo.

This is just the detail thing, but I just looked today that photo in my home in the vinyl and I think itīs not exactly same. There is some guy in the back of the band in the photo in this thread and I think I didnīt see him in that vinyls photo. I canīt compare vinyl and that thread photo because I donīt have computer in home at the moment (I am now in the library).

But yes, I think also it would have been great cover also for the sake itīs from that gig and the cover photo isnīt.

They photoshopped him out! I just compared the pic on the last page with the lp pic...rocker dude looking on is erased from history!

Dr Chocolate 12.06.2012 12:51 AM

finally got it when i got back home and played the fuck out of it
listened to it 3 times the night i got it
then at least another 5 or 7 more times that week
its a fucking great sounding show
way better then what i was thinking
because i wasn't under the impression it'd be a 4 track tape with a board feed
as i haven't really heard alot of the live shows they have put out
but i think this one tops Hold That Tiger
which i mustve heard 100s and 100s of times by now
but wow!
just fucking wow!
amazing preformance!
i was under the impression it was to be a 180 gram pressing
i'm guessing that i'm wrong
i've seen it in a few stores along the ways and didn't see any at 180 gram
