It's always funny in retrospect. Let's see, I said this, thinking she'd laugh and think how witty I am, but she reacts entirely unexpectedly, I'm in the doghouse. Shit, that was weird. How did that happen, and how can I avoid it in the future?

It's impossible to figure out, of course. Because there will always be that next time when you think you're gonna be the funny man again. I just need to keep my mouth shut more.

But oh that first kiss when you're friends again. So nice.

play on, player
you so old school
you remind me of my dad

gmku 09.21.2008 03:28 PM

I might write this all up in a script and send it to Larry. After the party next weekend, of course. Who knows what will happen then, especially if I open my stupid mouth. "So, what's this about you and the kids? What's up with that?" "Huh?" "You know. (Nudge) You know how you guys are with the girlfriends and all."

racehorse 09.21.2008 03:43 PM

That definately sounds like CYE. It reminds me of that one where Larry and Richard Lewis are in the bathroom, discussing the differences between black men and white men in bed, when Muggsy Bogues comes in, and Larry and Richard both get caught trying to look at his penis in the urinal.

I LOL'ed

After the party report:

1. We were the only white faces there, my wife and I and our two friends (our 30-something married couple friends). There were about 50 black people.

2. gmku and his friend become bartenders. We were volunteered, in a weird reversal of the racial stereotype of the servant. We didn't know what the hell we were doing, but we poured generously--everything from glasses of merlot and snifters of cognac to strawberry daquaris and rum & Cokes--and kept 50 black people very happy!

No tips, but the best part, of course, was getting creative with our own concoctions and drinking them. I came up with a Ruby Red grapefruit juice-based equivalent of a tequilla sunrise, there being no opened orange juice around.

3. What does black and white mean when the colors are stated on your invitation? For all you losers who think it means "black tie," it doesn't. It means black and white. I wore black dress chinos and a black and white thin stripped long-sleeve shirt, for example, and my wife wore a black and white patterned dress. We fit right in--well, as well as two white kids can fit in at something like this.

I can only assume that last question is rhetorical, as I'll be damned if I'll take advice from people young enough to be my bairns when I've harpooned a long-time broad to suffer my shit sense of humour.

If broad is reading - hi! I don't really refer to you as a broad, honest.

gmku 09.28.2008 05:21 PM

Rhetorical not just in the sense that I'd hardly expect a youngster to have the answer--but also in the sense that I don't think it can be answered period.

Nonetheless it's something to be contemplated. Like a koan. Ultimately perhaps enlightenment will come.

Anyway, the climax of this episode of the gmku show is that my friend Mark and I had a blast behind the bar.

Glice 09.28.2008 05:29 PM

Women are mental. Mine accuses me of objectifying her all the time. But then, she is a bookshelf.

atari 2600 09.28.2008 07:21 PM

Yes, it means black & white harlequin outfits...ha good one, SYRFox.

As has been pointed out, it's a formal event.

gmku 09.28.2008 07:28 PM

mmmm, not really. I was there. It wasn't formal. You just had to wear casual dressy black and white clothes.

Srsly. I would have been the laughing stock if I'd shown up in black tie.

atari 2600 09.28.2008 07:32 PM

black and white casual

not a bad idea...so, a good mix of people or just funky people?>

gmku 09.28.2008 07:34 PM

Well, if you'll read my post above, you'll see it was about a 95 percent Afro-American to 5 percent Caucasian American mix. So, good mix? Not really.

And yeah, definitely funky. There was the drunk grandma who was sloshed before she even came up for her first vodka and cranberry juice. She made return trips to the bar about every 10 minutes, each time the opening on her blouse getting looser and looser.

There was the gold-toothed auntie who came up and ordered two drinks and not so subtly passed one off to an underaged girl.

atari 2600 09.28.2008 08:28 PM

Oh, you know I scrolled through the previous pages to see if this had taken place or not yet...I did so before I posted, but oops, missed all that.

I went to a Ohio Players/P-Funk All-Stars show in a park once being one of the very few people there of the lighter skin persuasion.

It was a pretty good show. Kinda liked The Ohio Players more.
