Jt 09.09.2006 05:16 PM

Actually, I've just got hold of that Raccoo-oo-oon record, 'Is Night People'.

...Jesus. What a beautiful mess. Pick that one up if you can.

Top 10 of 2006

OOIOO - Taiga
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
OLAibi - Humming Moon Drip
Brad Mehldau Trio - House on Hill
Neil Young - Living With War
Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways
Be Your Own Pet - Be Your Own Pet
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - The River in Reverse
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Liars - Drum's Not Dead

finding nobody 09.09.2006 10:28 PM

Oh, I forgot about Mr. Cash's new one. I like it

atari 2600 09.09.2006 10:40 PM

it's outtakes from the Rubin sessions...

House on Hill is also a collection of unreleased material and not a "new" recording. It features the fabulous drumming of Jorge Rossy who left the trio over a year ago to pursue a solo career sometime in the future.

2006 has been the weakest year for music of the naught-naughts so far.
biggest letdown of the year
(bearing in mind that I haven't heard Dylan's Modern Times yet)

Paul Simon - Surprise

a close second
Tom Petty - Highway Companion

Everyneurotic 09.09.2006 10:47 PM

ga!! i forgot:

thom yorke - the eraser
elf power - back to the web
beirut - gulag orkestra
om - conference of the birds
boris - pink (can't wait for vein and alter/altar!!!)
mono - you are there

i'm sure i'm missing others.

raccoo-oo-oon are one of the greatest unsung bands of the new millennium and puke all over the boobless stripes (racounters or whatever they are called). i'm yet to pick up anything new by them, though.

atari 2600 09.09.2006 11:00 PM

I forgot Film School (s/t but 3rd album I think). I have also forgotten to look for it & buy it. I only have their first one, A Brilliant Career & wrote somewhat recently that they were better than SM + The Jicks. Fuck The Raconteurs; Get Behind Me Satan did make my top (I think it was) 20 (not 10) last year though. I was thinking about Elf Power for #10, but Liars won out. (it's the year of the tribal drum, I suppose). Back to the Web is more ambitious than 2004's Walking With the Beggar Boys, probably their most ambitious album they've ever done, but just not quite as good. (and Beggar Boys was even a step down in quality to me).
In random notes (of similar tones), Built to Spill almost made it on my list this year.

But please, to those reading, buy an Elf Power album! You won't be terribly disappointed, I promise!

For the last couple of years, I have been making a mixed cd of download offerings from my top ten albums of the year. I don't know if I'll be continuing that effort this year though.

Everyneurotic 09.09.2006 11:06 PM

i don't know man, it's the only ep i have and it sounds ace to me. plus, i don't exclude stuff, my list is like thirty albums and there's still a lot i haven't heard.

atari 2600 09.09.2006 11:59 PM

Was that live performance from Rome of The Original Silence from 2005 released this year?

That would make my top 10.

drrrtyboots 09.10.2006 12:08 AM

when the new akron/family comes out in a few weeks i might have a winner or a huge dissappointment. but the young people albums great.

Signpost 09.10.2006 04:46 AM

Because I'm lazy, I'll just post this: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Leon_Zozo/2006_so_far

atsonicpark 09.10.2006 07:08 AM

It's been a good year for music.

As was 2004, 2002, and 2000. All the years in betwen have been pretty forgettable.

atsonicpark 09.10.2006 07:09 AM

Oh.. album of the year so far is probably the new giddy motors.

toxic johnny 09.10.2006 09:33 AM

This is my top 5 so far this year... in no order.

Why I hate Women - Pere Ubu
For Sada Jane - Magik Markers
Permanent Drool - Warmer Milks
Espers II - Espers
Diskaholics Anonymous trio - Weapons Of Ass Destruction

Iain 09.10.2006 09:39 AM

WHAT! There's a new Pere Ubu record?

I know it's boring but I love their early records but haven't been able to enjoy anything after The Art of Walking all that much.

toxic johnny 09.10.2006 09:51 AM

Yes it's coming out soon and I shamelessly managed to blag an advance copy... I'm happy to report it's fantastic especially a track called Stolen Cadillac.

Actually I haven't been able to enjoy much of their stuff since New Picnic Time so this new album has been quite a revelation for me.

Danny Himself 09.10.2006 09:53 AM

'The Greatest' - Cat Power
'Rather Ripped' - Sonic Youth
'Be Your Own Pet' - BYOP

atari 2600 09.10.2006 10:28 AM

I love Cat Power. The Greatest is better than You are Free was. It still doesn't make a top ten though (for me).

Everyneurotic 09.10.2006 12:04 PM

i can't believe i forgot charalambides - a vintage burden, that album rules!

Glice 09.10.2006 12:20 PM

Hypothesis: There is no such thing as 'best years' in music, it's entirely down to a number of factors, mostly to do with 'time of life' - for instance, I might consider 2002 to be a 'bad year' for new music, but that was because I bought very few records that year, owing to fiscal constraints. Meanwhile, 1997 wasn't a 'good year' especially, it's just that I started getting into collecting records properly that year, so I have a lot of records from that era with a lot of teenage memories attached.

?

Is the new Yo La Tengo out yet? I've heard a couple songs from the album on the radio that I liked. But I haven't seen the album in the racks yet. I'm betting that'll make my 2006 list.

HaydenAsche 09.11.2006 09:31 AM

I guess a few I forgot or that I haven't heard yet but will surely be amazing.

Madlib - The Beat Konducta
POS - Audition
Hockey Night - Ehh. What's the title of that album?

Coming up:
New Beck
New Modest Mouse

darthblav 09.11.2006 02:51 PM

mew - and the glass handed kites
russian circle's - enter
neko case - fox confessor brings the floods
jesu - silver ep
sy - rather ripped
tv on the radio - return to cookie mountain
the sword - age of winters

that is off the top of my head. i probably forgetting an album or two.

Glice 09.11.2006 03:15 PM

Mew! Fuck me, I didn't think they were still going.

Anyone remember Melys? They were fucking ace.

porkmarras 09.11.2006 03:17 PM

Yeah Melys.Them.

porkmarras 09.11.2006 03:52 PM

You might as well throw Symposium and Silver Sun on there for good measure then.

gmku 09.11.2006 04:07 PM

Yo La Tengo's new one is out tomorrow. Anybody here buying it?

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 09.11.2006 04:53 PM
