It's official. It's a rehash of the Norwegian interview.
Then again, it sparks the new label rumor mill. |
It's Domino.
|
It's Def Jam.
|
I hate that wendy's commercial where there is a song and the guys are singing but all they are saying is "beef beef beef and baaaaacon"
|
Also, "The last 5 albums were compromised by being on a major label"?
Yeah, NYC Ghosts and Flowers sounds like a mainstream fucking hit! |

Rule #1 to reading a Sonic Youth interview or article: don't believe anything Thurston says. He's not "absent minded", he's the king of bullshit. I say that as a big fan who gets what he's up to. He still finds it amusing that people from Rolling Stone and the like would even ask him anything, and enjoys feeding them lines in his perfect deadpan to see what they'll print. Given that the new album will be on an indie, of course he'd dis the major label. He knows PR better than Karl Rove. Thankfully, he's on our side. |
True, it just made me laugh haha.

Oh yeah, because there are always so many people that do take what he says serious. Like Geffen was looking over their shoulders when they recorded 1,000 Leaves saying, "You gotta make a single out of this "Hoarfrost" song, look, lets bring in Britney's back-up singers and funk it up a little..." |
Hahaha.
|
i always thought there should be a hip-hop remix to hoarfrost. when they played it live the drums were totally hip hoppy. bet they could get DOOM to spit some hot fire over it.

Why not ecstatic peace...?
|
Happy 1000 posts.
Of course a new SY album will be promoted by Ecstatic Peace in some capacity, but it'd probably help to get the word out if SY was under the branch of another label for promotional purposes, amongst other things. |
I think the worst business move they could possibly make would be to put it out on ecstatic peace. Thurston would have to start taking the label seriously for the first time ever then, right as they were touring. Ian MacKaye might be able to pull that shit off, but he's unique, and he didn't do it overnight either.

Yes.

Great how Moshe is either deliberately letting the rumor mill spin or twisting somebody's arm to get the scoop for us. 'Til it snaps baby!

that may very wekll be true. geffen at first was pushing SY very hard, and after a while they just seemed to fade in their support, kinda using SY as their boutique avant band, one that they can use to get other acts into geffen label, I do not think that thurston meant the songs were compromised, or the music, but maybe everyhing that gpes with it, like touring where egeffen wanted them to tour, the packagingof albums, and the imagery. who knows? geffen did not make any effort to promote SY's videos that is for sure. |

that would actually be much more work ecstatic peace is a small operation, barely getting intern staffing recently. smells like is bigger, but steve is busy with his own stable and to have to add such a juggernaut as sonic youth could completely detract from teir other acts, which is something steve nor sonic youth ever seem to want to do. they are very fair about it |
I heard they were signing to Starbucks.
|
I think Sub Pop would be awesome but for some reason I just dont think so.
Domino i'm indifferent towards |

|
Rather Ripped pt. 2 PLZZZ. I want as much Sleepin' Around as sonically possible.
|
haha.
rather repped, drrtyboots. |
They should go back to their no-wave roots...
|
They should make a full length album that sounds like silver sessions.... TIMES TWO!
|
They should just do something new
|
Kim and Thurston should make a sex tape and then suffer the disappointment in realizing the only people to watch it would be Mike Ibold and king_buzzo.
|
Twice louder than the 1st silver sessions !!!!

i am suprised no one mention how pitchfork is spying on here for their stories
Sonic Youth Poised to Take Indie Label Plunge Plus: New Sonic Youth album possibly titled The Eternal ![]() For as much as we may consider them paragons of indie-ness in pretty much every sense of the word, the truth remains that Sonic Youth have been on a major label roster-- Geffen's-- for almost two decades. With their Geffen contract up following the release of 2006's Rather Ripped, however, all signs point to Sonic Youth returning to the loving hands of an indie imprint. But which? "There's one label we are certainly going to go with at this point," Thurston Moore recently told Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Daily blog. "But I don't think I'm allowed to disclose that right now. I don't want to risk having a shit storm." A recent article in Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen quotes Moore as suggesting the label is Domino, and that Sonic Youth's new album will arrive in spring 2009 bearing the title The Eternal. A representative for Domino, however, refutes the claim that SY have signed to the label. (i wonder how many pitchfork staffers search norwegian newspapers?) The title may be a bit premature as well. Indeed, according to Rock & Roll Daily, Sonic Youth are still in the writing stage on the new record. Quoth Moore, "I've written a half-dozen song ideas. I try not to complete them so much. Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things." The group reportedly plans to hit the studio in November. Another rumored strong contender for SY's contract ink is Matador, though the label denies this as well. One thing's for sure though: Moore is enjoying the relative freedom that comes with a return to indie-dom. "It feels great," he told Rock & Roll Daily. "The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that's the way it goes." Until somebody breaks the silence surrounding Sonic Youth's new record deal, however, we'll have to content ourselves with the handful of SY and Thurston Moore shows in the coming weeks. |
